“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:12-13

If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to read our last post on the book of John, because it’s there that Jesus provides the context in which he shares today’s passage.

What we’re seeing here is Jesus revealing the secret of life to us.

He’s revealing to us the meaning of life. He’s revealing to you, your purpose. And that is to love people the way Jesus loves people. And the second sentence in our passage defines how Jesus loves people: he lays down his life for them.

So the secret of life is maybe the most counterintuitive thing ever:

Love the people around you by putting their lives ahead of your own.
