Sex and Your Future–Trading Forty Five Minutes for 1,000 Years: Genesis 49:1-28

Read Genesis 49:1-28

Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.” Genesis 49:1

Living Life Like James Bond

I have a friend, Kent, whose life was a little bit like a James Bond movie–at least for a couple of years. When he was in his twenties, he used to deliver Top Secret documents to a government location he won’t permit me to disclose. He traveled with a Halliburton attache case handcuffed to his wrist. He carried a 45 Colt in a shoulder holster, and a 38 Smith and Wesson on his ankle for backup. He was a nice looking guy and, not surprisingly, women found his secret agent persona attractive. Several female flight attendants made themselves sexually available to him. He decided to take them up on their offers. He was married at the time.

Love Like Jesus — Love and the Sabbath: Mark 2:27

Love Like Jesus: Sabbath -- keep it“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” -Jesus Christ (Mark 2:27)

How Jesus Loved People

Jesus loved people effectively by keeping the Sabbath.

How to Love Like Jesus

Looking back, the times in my life when I was enthusiastically keeping the Sabbath were the times I was loving people more like Jesus. But there have been a few times in my life when the cult of busy-ness caused the Sabbath to become a casualty.

One such time Continue reading

Thanksgiving and Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway

Thanksgiving Perspective Chicago Dan RyanChicago — on the Dan Ryan

He was coming up over a hill at sixty-five miles per hour on the Dan Ryan Expressway. His three year-old son was doing what many three year-olds did in those days, he was standing up in the middle of the back seat, so he could see out the windshield. Suddenly, as he came up over the rise, there were wrecked cars everywhere. There was no time to react. The situation was impossible. A high speed impact was unavoidable. Continue reading

Love Like Jesus — Love With Loyalty: Matthew 12:1-2

Love Like Jesus LoyalAt that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”  -Matthew 12:1-2

How Jesus Loved People

“Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath,” the Pharisees said. Jesus’ disciples were under attack. Continue reading

Why Some People Have One More Than Their Brothers: Genesis 48:21-22

Genesis Baby Boomers Prosperity

Dungeon Below Blarney Castle

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers. And to you I give one more ridge of land than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.” Genesis 48:21-22

Baby Boomer Behavior

Lately I’ve noticed the abundance said and written by twenty and thirty-somethings about how “that miserable baby boomer generation has failed us.”

“They’re greedy geezers.”

“They’re leaving us a great burden of debt.”

“The leaders from their generation are short sighted and selfish.”

“It’s as though they threw a big party and left it to us to clean up their mess.”

And besides all that, “They told us we could be anything we wanted as long as we put our minds to it. I found out recently — I can’t be an astronaut after all.”

Let me just tell you what I think about all these statements, they’re all undeniably Continue reading

Love Like Jesus — Love the Lost Cause: John 5:2-9

Jesus Loves Lost Cause

Temple Grandin Presenting at TED Conference

Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

John 5:2-9

How Jesus Loved People

Jesus loved this man, even though anyone else would consider him a lost cause.

How to Love Like Jesus

I spoke with someone today who told me about a disabled man he once cared for in an adult foster home. The disabled man’s name is Daniel. Daniel is angry all the time, he can’t speak, or do much of anything to take care of himself. After working there for awhile my friend was surprised to learn, that up until five years previous, Daniel was happy, and could speak and communicate very well. But Continue reading

The Election is Over — Now What? Genesis 48:17-20

Election Over -- Now What? When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know… ”

…he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

Genesis 48:17-20

The Election is Over, Now What?

“When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased.” (v.17)

He put Ephraim, Joseph’s second born, ahead of Joseph’s first born, Manasseh — and Joseph didn’t like it.

How about this election? One man was put ahead of another. How did you like it? I find it interesting we find ourselves at this precise point in Genesis, the day after the election. Because Continue reading

Love Like Jesus — Drink New Wine: Luke 5:39

evangelism tools

Wineskin in Nazareth

“…no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.'”

-Jesus Christ (Luke 5:39)

How Jesus Loved People

Jesus loved people by remaining open and sensitive to the Holy Spirit, even when the Spirit was doing something new.

How to Love Like Jesus

I heard a sermon awhile back from a pastor I love and respect. In fact, in my opinion, he’s one of the best I’ve ever heard. But in this particular sermon, he railed against setting up a Facebook page: “A Facebook page — REALLY?” His motive is valid, he’s concerned about narcissism in the church — a valid concern if I ever heard one! But I believe he’s also missing out on new wine God is pouring upon the world today.

Love Like Jesus — Fast: Luke 5:35

Bible FastJesus answered, “…the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”

Luke 5:35

How Jesus Loved People

Jesus loved people by fasting for them. He fasted for you. He fasted for me. He fasted for all of us.

“Hey, wait a minute,” you might be saying right now. “When did Jesus fast for me? He wasn’t fasting when He said those words in Luke 5:35.”

Of course you’re right. Continue reading
