Oxytocin, The Love Hormone

“Oxytocin (sometimes called the love hormone) is released into the mother’s brain when she breast feeds. In the months after pregnancy a mother’s brain is particularly receptive to oxytocin. This hormone engenders bonding between the mother and the baby.

“The oxytocin also causes the mother to enjoy the smell of her baby. Which might explain why every mother finds her baby beautiful and wonderful–even when the baby is ugly and smells bad.” (Teixeira)

“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
yet I will not forget you.” Isaiah 49:15

What Child Is This?

God loves us like this. Like a mother loves her baby. Even beyond how a mother loves her baby. He loves us even when we’re ugly. He loves us even when we stink it up. (Teixeira, Isaiah 49:14-16)

He loves us so much He gave His Son to the world in the most vulnerable form possible. He gave His Son to the world in the form of a baby: to live, and grow, and work, and give, and die. Just like any one of us do. Except his death took away the immense weight of our failures and sins.
