Things You Should Know About The Author Of This Blog: I live with a dog who thinks he’s a human

He watches TV–like a human. Here we see him watching John Wayne with Kathy. He likes John Wayne movies. I think it’s the horses.

Up until a few months ago, my mom-in-law lived with us. She was sick and dying. Werner seemed to know this and liked to lay down nearby. One time he brought a mouth full of his dog food and laid it at her feet. He’s never done that before, or since.

He likes to lay in our bed even though he’s not supposed to. (Full disclosure: I found him this way, with his head on the pillow, just as you see him, but I was the one who pulled the blanket up.)

Here he’s using an armrest while sitting next to Anastasia. I thought he looked rather distinguished in this photo–almost as though he should be smoking a pipe.

Here’s Werner watching the trailer for the movie Risen. He likes to sit that way sometimes.

Here’s Werner watching TV alone, in case you thought he only watched when the humans watched. I had to sneak up behind him to take this picture. It was pretty easy because he was engrossed in the television show. He watches too much TV. He probably needs to get out more.

So that’s Werner, the dog who thinks he’s a human. This blog post is somewhat of a highlight reel, most of the time he acts like a normal dog. I mentioned my sick and dying mom-in-law. Werner is old (in dog years) and, for the last week or more, he seems to be sick and dying too. We all “go the way of all the earth,” every one of us. It’s part of our experience here. But I’ve never been around a dog with so much personality. I’m going to miss Werner.

“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.” Joshua 23:14

    • My son named him “Werner Herzdog” after the German filmmaker Werner Herzog. He’s a German Shorthaired Pointer (the dog, not the filmmaker). Thanks for stopping by Doug.

  1. Wow, this is great Kurt! How funny!
My friend has two dogs and the interesting thing about them is that she will talk to them in Hebrew with one word: Shema! Shema means hear. This is the first word for the Aaronic Blessing as you probably know. But the dogs stop what they’re doing and stand at attention to listen and obey! Try it out on Werner and see what happens.
Now, the interesting thing is that in the beginning when the animals were created and Adam named them, they not only understood what was being said in Hebrew they actually spoke as well in Hebrew.
The following comes from http://www.all-creatures.org/discuss/ansouls-jv.html :
    In Genesis 3:1 we read:
“Now serpent was MORE CUNNING THAN ANY OTHER CREATURE Yahweh Elohim had made.”
In verses 2-3 we are told that the serpent led a conversation with Eve. It was able to speak, think and reason. All other animals had the same ability, only the serpent was most cunning. Jesus advised his disciples to be WISE like serpents. This implies that serpents are intelligent.
In the book of Jubilees 3:28 we read:
“On that day the mouth of all the beasts and cattle and birds and whatever walked or moved was stopped from SPEAKING because all of them USED TO SPEAK with one another with one speech and language.”
    In Job 12:7-10 we read:
“Even birds and animals have much they could teach you; ask the creatures of the earth and sea for their wisdom. ALL OF THEM KNOW THAT YAHWEH’S HAND MADE THEM. In His hand are the SOULS of all His creatures and the breath of all humanity.”
Job states that all animals are aware of who was their creator. It is also plainly stated that all animals also have souls and that their souls are in God’s care. In Revelation 5:13 we are plainly told that all creatures of the universe actually are capable of praising God with a rational mind.
Our Elohim is an awesome God!
