The Only Way to Fly

God Running is a place for anyone who wants to (or even anyone who wants to want to) love Jesus more deeply, follow Jesus more closely, and love people the way Jesus wants us to.

We’re taking a break from our journey through the book of Acts so I can share a conversation with you that I had today. Because I’ve shared about it in previous posts, some of you know Gabe and I have been training toward our private pilot licenses. It’s been a great adventure and there’s no one I’d rather share it with than Gabe! Today my newfound interest in aviation led to an interesting conversation with a young friend of mine, Justin. Justin just completed helicopter pilot training and I’ve been enjoying his videos and pictures on social media for several weeks now.

And I’ve been wondering what his end goal is. Is Justin interested in flying a a helicopter to fight wildland fires? Is he interested in becoming a commercial helicopter pilot? Is he considering a career as a medical transport helicopter pilot? For some reason these questions have been on my mind lately. So this afternoon I reached out to Justin in a private message and this was our conversation:

Kurt: “Been thinking about you. What’s your goal in aviation?”

Justin: “Honestly I don’t really have a goal. As cliché as it may sound, I’m just putting one foot in front of the other as the Lord directs them. That’s how I got into the Jordan…so I’m just on a journey through these parted waters for now I guess.”

Kurt: “‘One foot in front of another as the Lord directs.’ That’s so great! That’s how I’m trying to live each day. So if I’m hearing you correctly, it’s a fun adventure at this point, without any aviation career aspirations.”

Justin: “I think I’m suppose to stay in a posture of faith, and not try to ‘get my ducks in a row’ like I normally do. I tend to get ahead of where God has asked me to be, and I start to put more focus on figuring things out rather than focusing on The One who called me to the river. This journey has been about trying to just be obedient and let God be God.”

Kurt: “That’s the only way to fly.”

Love Like Jesus: How Jesus Loved People (and how you can love like Jesus)

Love Like Jesus begins with the story of how after a life of regular church attendance and Bible study, Bennett was challenged by a pastor to study Jesus. That led to an obsessive seven year deep dive. After pouring over Jesus’ every interaction with another human being, he realized he was doing a much better job of studying Jesus’ words than he was following Jesus’ words and example. The honest and fearless revelations of Bennett’s own moral failures affirm he wrote this book for himself as much as for others.

Love Like Jesus examines a variety of stories, examples, and research, including:

  • Specific examples of how Jesus communicated God’s love to others.
  • How Jesus demonstrated all five of Gary Chapman’s love languages (and how you can too).
  • The story of how Billy Graham extended Christ’s extraordinary love and grace toward a man who misrepresented Jesus to millions.
  • How to respond to critics the way Jesus did.
  • How to love unlovable people the way Jesus did.
  • How to survive a life of loving like Jesus (or how not to become a Christian doormat).
  • How Jesus didn’t love everyone the same (and why you shouldn’t either).
  • How Jesus guarded his heart by taking care of himself–he even napped–and why you should do the same.
  • How Jesus loved his betrayer Judas, even to the very end.

With genuine unfiltered honesty, Love Like Jesus, shows you how to live a life according to God’s definition of success: A life of loving God well, and loving the people around you well too.

A life of loving like Jesus.
