How Do You Compare?

God Running is a place for anyone who wants to (or even anyone who wants to want to) love Jesus more deeply, follow Jesus more closely, and love people the way Jesus wants us to.

In the last six months or so I managed to connect myself with several groups of people who love Jesus well and love people well.

And it’s changed my perspective pretty radically.

To my shame, I used to compare myself with others and feel like I was smarter than most of the people around me, or I was more athletic than most of the people around me, or I worked harder than most of the people around me. (Yeah, I know–that’s a very arrogant attitude.)

But now I’m connected with these people who follow Jesus closely and I’m learning about these people: what they’re like, and who they are, and how Christ’s spirit fills the room when they’re around, and the way they love God and people.

It’s been so good for me.

And I’m so grateful to be connected with these people.

Now I’m looking at myself in the context of what’s important to God and Christ.

And now when I compare myself to the people around me, I realize,

I’m one of the least.

And that’s been a very good thing.

If you want to change your perspective and enrich your life, do whatever you have to do to connect yourself, on a frequent regular basis, with people who love Jesus well and love others well.

You’ll be glad you did.

  1. Hi, My name is Matt! I’ve been following your posts for some time now. I believe they have been helping shape me in my growth in Christ! I have gotten out of my comfort zone and attend men’s bible study with Christ followers. And I give thanks to the Holy Spirit by working through you! May God bless and strengthen you Kurt!

    • That’s great Matthew!

I’ve been following Kurt’s writing for years. Despite living on opposite coasts of the country, we even got to meet once and go to church together! That was years ago now. About two years ago, I was going through a tough season. Kurt and I texted a bit about it and then we simply called each other and Kurt prayed for me. I was sitting on a stoop in downtown Charleston and Kurt’s prayers lifted me up. He’s a great example of “loving like Jesus.”

I hope you get to keep reading his devotionals. They are a blessing to many.

  2. I love the way you expressed this, Kurt. The way Christ’s spirit fills the room when they’re around. Beautiful. Thank you. Glory to God!
