When I’m Weak and Weary: Following Christ for Exhausted People

A close-up of a young boy with closed eyes, praying with his hands clasped together in front of a softly lit Christmas tree and blurred festive lights in the background.

God Running is a place for anyone who wants to love Jesus more deeply, follow Jesus more closely, and love people the way Jesus wants us to.

What can we do if we’re weary, if we have little energy to invest in serving Jesus? In a certain sense, our lack of strength is an advantage.

Our Lord once said to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). And Paul took those words to heart. He wrote:

“For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-11)

Paul had been stoned and left for dead, shipwrecked, and flogged. So it’s not surprising that he struggled with weakness. This series is based on Saint Thérèse’s book, The Little Way. Her weakness and suffering came from pulmonary and intestinal tuberculosis. She died at age 24. I find it interesting how Paul and Saint Thérèse had weakness and suffering in common.

When we have no strength of our own, we have no option but to rely on Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

That was Paul’s advantage. That was Saint Thérèse’s advantage.

If you’re weary, that’s your advantage too.

As Saint Thérèse says, if you’re weary, take “the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute self-surrender.”1
