The passage we’re about to look at is amazing. It’s amazing because it’s a revelation of the most important relationship to ever exist: the relationship between Jesus and his Father. We see here, plainly stated by Jesus himself, ten attributes of the perfect relationship between Father and Son.

We’ll look at those ten attributes of Jesus’ relationship with his Father from John 5:17-37 (I encourage you to read the passage first), then we’ll look at Jesus’ relationship with his disciples, and, finally, we’ll take a look at Jesus’ relationship with you.

Imitating Maravich–And Imitating Christ

Pistol Pete Maravich by Daniel X ONeil-CCPete Maravich

When I was in highschool I read this book about the great basketball player Pete Maravich. He averaged 44.2 points per game in college ball one year. He was great in the NBA too. Some of the moves you see in the NBA today were pioneered by Maravich. He became one of my heroes and I was inspired by his life. I was never much of a basketball player but after I read about Maravich I improved dramatically. I read about how he was a gym rat, so I became a gym rat. I read about how he practiced, so I began to practice that way. I learned to shoot the way he shot. I learned some great basketball moves by imitating Pete Maravich’s basketball moves. The result was Read More

Religious Bigots

Against the Flow

The Definition Of A Bigot

I want to begin by saying I struggled with using the word bigot. The first definition that comes up when I Google it is, “a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.” That’s similar to other definitions I found, including the one from Merriam-Webster and that’s the meaning of the word as it’s used in this blog post. But for many people today the word bigot has become synonymous with the word racist and that’s NOT the meaning of the word as used in this article.

When Rules Trump Jesus’ Love

Today a Christian friend of mine shared about a man I’ll call Tom. My friend cared for this man in a group home because Tom had a serious cognitive disability. Tom’s capacity to enjoy life was severely limited: there was just one, and only one, activity that brought him joy and that was Read More

See And Hear For Yourself

Die to selfSo when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.” John 4:40-42

The other day I put up the video of Monty Williams (NBA Read More

7 Reasons You Can Relax About Evangelism

(Read John 4:31-42.) In our last post from the book of John we learned about how Jesus commands us to go and make disciples of all nations. I don’t know about you but whenever this topic comes up, the topic of evangelism, I start feeling pretty awkward. But while we can’t ignore Jesus’ command to evangelize, we don’t have to stress about it. In today’s post we’ll look at seven reasons why we can relax while evangelizing. Read More

Read John 4:16-42

Last post we saw what the woman at the well did (and what you and I do) when she was confronted with her sin. Today we’ll see that what she does next is truly amazing. But first I want to look at a man who reminds me of the woman in our text.

A Remarkably Tragic Childhood

This  man’s childhood is remarkable to me because it was so filled with tragedy. It’s hard to imagine a childhood worse than his.

Last Post we saw how Jesus shared about the gift he had for the woman at the well, and the gift he has for us, the water that becomes a well inside, a well of living water that springs up into everlasting life.

The 7th Man In Her Life

After he spoke of that gift, Jesus talked about the six men in the Samaritan woman’s life: her previous five husbands and the lover Read More
