The Watney House Fire

From the street it looked like a one story house. But because it was built on a hillside, from the back you could see another level below with sliding glass doors opening out to a patio and back yard. This was the house where the Watney kids lived: Melissa, Mark, and Emma. Read More

Why Didn’t God Heal Me?

Why didn't God heal me?

Suffering has been a popular topic with my friends and family for the last few weeks. So today I’m posting one of the most popular posts on suffering from God Running. From the archives . . . Read More

Suffering

Crosswalk by A Strakey-CCIt’s 1:34 AM on Saturday as I write this blog post without my usual beta reader and better half Kathy. We traveled from Portland to Lakeland, Florida on Tuesday for business reasons and our flight made for a long day. We spent so much time on airplanes I remember a moment when Kathy, looking up from our seats in coach toward the big seats in front, said, “We’re going to sit in first class someday.” I just laughed. (If you knew anything about our budget, you’d laugh too.)

During the drive from the Tampa airport to our hotel I remember seeing a billboard along U.S. Highway 98 that said, “Lakeland Regional Health Joins Mayo Clinic.” When I read that, I thought to myself, “That’s impressive.” I’m a fan of the Mayo Clinic. Read More

Upon One Who Is Chilled

Inspiration for this short passage of fiction was drawn mainly from three different sources: James Joyce’s famous short story, The Dead, Luke 11:5-13, and my and Kathy’s personal experiences caring for mom during the last nine months of her battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Some readers try to read too much into a work of fiction such as the one found below. I thank you in advance for not being one of those readers. (Did I mention–it’s fiction.) Read More

He watches TV–like a human. Here we see him watching John Wayne with Kathy. He likes John Wayne movies. I think it’s the horses.

Up until a few months ago, my mom-in-law lived with us. She was sick and dying. Werner seemed to know this and liked to lay down nearby. One time he brought a mouth full of his dog food and laid it at her feet. He’s never done that before, or since. Read More

Someone I Love Lies Dying In My Bedroom Right Now

time-is-running-out-by-glasgows-finest-ccAs I write this someone I love lies dying in my bedroom.

Life is short.

Life is fragile.

Live for Jesus.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” –Jesus Christ

The Surest Way To Work Up A Crusade

“The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have a chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior ‘righteous indignation’–this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats.”

–Aldous Huxley

“for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:20
