Things I Heard In Church: “His Name Tag Says, Tatsu Yamashiro”

Things I Heard In Church: “His name tag says, Tatsu Yamashiro.”

Every Tuesday night at six, Cedar Mill Bible Church hosts a dinner called The Jesus Table. At The Jesus Table an excellent meal and warm friendship are provided for the homeless and anyone else who has trouble affording food or finding a friend. The dishwasher for The Jesus Table is a guy in his twenties who wears a different name tag every week. Each name is the alter ego of a fictional superhero, like Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent.

Last Tuesday night, in the Jesus Table kitchen, his name tag said, “Tatsu Yamashiro.”

Things I Heard In Church: “Can you believe what Comcast did to me?”

Referring to the synagogue ruler who was indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath:

“The NIV says that he is indignant. The word in Greek means like: really super annoyed. He’s an angry elf. He’s a super annoyed guy, and so what does he do? He tries to get everybody as annoyed as him. This is what anger does when it gets ahold of us. When you’re really hacked at something, what do you do? Everybody else should be as hacked as I am! ‘Can you believe what Comcast did to me?’ You go tell everybody.”

Maybe my all-time favorite Matt Bowen teaching to date: 2/14/2016, You’re Free, Luke 13:10-21

Things I Heard In Church: These 2 (two-ish) Questions

Things I heard in church: These 2 (two-ish) Questions

First, the wrong question. This is a question I’ve asked myself in the past and a question most of us ask: “How much can I please myself and still be saved?”

But that’s my self serving, selfish nature asking that question. Here’s the second and right question to ask, a question I don’t ask enough: “How close can I get to Christ? How Can I grow closer? What can I do to draw closer to God?” (James 4:8)

Things I Heard In Church: Imagine a church where every single person comes to get something from others

“Imagine a church where every single person without exception comes to consume, to get something–from others. They are there, every single one of them, to receive, and not one would get what they came for.

“Now imagine a church where every single person without exception comes to love the other people there. They are there, every one of them, to give. Every single one will receive what they’re looking for.

“Hebrews 10:23-25 says ‘…stir up one another to love and good works…'”
–Chuck Bomar

We can’t stir up one another alone, there has to be others, there has to be community.

Things I Heard In Church: God catches your tears in a bottle

Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” (Revelation 21:5)

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
