I Want My Life To Count

I just finished watching a video of a David Platt teaching called Don’t Waste Your Life. At the beginning of this teaching Platt makes the statement: “I want my life to count.”

As I watched him say that, I thought to myself: Read More

Joseph And The War Vet: How Both Were Forgotten

Remember God Memorial Day(From the archives)
It’s Memorial Day weekend, the time we take to honor those who died while serving our country. In today’s post we’ll look at the life of Joseph and what he had in common with one U.S. war vet who died much later than you could imagine.

Genesis 40:8-23

Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and baker each have dreams on the same night. Joseph, their fellow prisoner, sees they’re dejected because they recognize the dreams as having meaning, but they can’t figure out the interpretation. So Joseph asks them the rhetorical question, “Do not interpretations belong to God?”

So the cupbearer decides to share his dream with Joseph.

The cupbearer, says, In my dream I see Read More

How Thomas Gets A Raw Deal

Doubting Thomas

Read John 11:7-16.

Last post from the book of John we looked at, what it looks like, when God doesn’t make sense. The post from the book of John before that one, we looked at how Martha gets a raw deal. Today we’re going to look at the record of another person in the Bible and how he gets a raw deal. Today we’re going to look at “Doubting Thomas.”

So You Doubt

DoubtDo you have doubts? Or do you know someone who doubts? If you do, this blog post is written for you.

A Christian Leader Who Doubts

Today I was reading about a Christian leader who has doubts. It’s inherent in his personality. He second guesses himself about everything, even small things. It’s his nature to want to get everything right. He likes to avoid mistakes. So he has this part of him that wells up inside and questions. He has even doubted his faith in Jesus. That’s kind of amazing because he’s a big player in Christian circles, yet he’s struggled with serious doubts about his faith. Read More

The Watney House Fire

From the street it looked like a one story house. But because it was built on a hillside, from the back you could see another level below with sliding glass doors opening out to a patio and back yard. This was the house where the Watney kids lived: Melissa, Mark, and Emma. Read More

Why Didn’t God Heal Me?

Why didn't God heal me?

Suffering

Crosswalk by A Strakey-CCIt’s 1:34 AM on Saturday as I write this blog post without my usual beta reader and better half Kathy. We traveled from Portland to Lakeland, Florida on Tuesday for business reasons and our flight made for a long day. We spent so much time on airplanes I remember a moment when Kathy, looking up from our seats in coach toward the big seats in front, said, “We’re going to sit in first class someday.” I just laughed. (If you knew anything about our budget, you’d laugh too.)

During the drive from the Tampa airport to our hotel I remember seeing a billboard along U.S. Highway 98 that said, “Lakeland Regional Health Joins Mayo Clinic.” When I read that, I thought to myself, “That’s impressive.” I’m a fan of the Mayo Clinic. Read More

How Martha Gets A Raw Deal

Jesus loves you by Elton Harding-CCWhen you hear the name Martha in the context of the Bible, what comes to mind? I know for me I think of the time Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and became “distracted with much serving.” All the while her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to his teaching. Martha became upset with Mary because she wasn’t lending a hand. In fact, she wasn’t contributing toward showing Jesus hospitality in any way other than listening to what he had to say.

Martha said to Jesus: Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work of serving alone? Tell her to help me.
