Blaise Pascal On Sickness

A Prayer for the Right Use of Sickness by Blaise Pascal, Pensees

Thirsty Again
Last post from the gospel of John we talked about how Jesus loved both the Samaritan woman living on the margin, and the Jewish man leading the mainstream. And we talked about how we need to love people in the same way Jesus did: all people, from all walks. Jesus loved them all.
We left off with Jesus asking the woman at the well for a drink of water. And when he does, she asks him why he, a Jewish man, would ask her, a woman of Samaria, for a drink.
And this is how he answers:

Things I heard in church: These 2 (two-ish) Questions
First, the wrong question. This is a question I’ve asked myself in the past and a question most of us ask: “How much can I please myself and still be saved?”
But that’s my self serving, selfish nature asking that question. Here’s the second and right question to ask, a question I don’t ask enough: “How close can I get to Christ? How Can I grow closer? What can I do to draw closer to God?” (James 4:8)
From Brett Meador’s teaching, The Dangers of Discontentment, Sunday, 6/14/2015
“I had spoken hastily and resentfully. Yet I knew that this was no way to solve a problem. ‘You must not harbor anger,’ I admonished myself. ‘You must be willing to suffer the anger of the opponent, and yet not return anger. You must not become bitter. No matter how emotional your opponents are, you must be calm.” –Martin Luther King
I’m reminded of Jesus’ words when he said, “…go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.'” (Matthew 9:13)
He quoted this scripture from Hosea–twice. (Hosea 6:6, Matthew 9:13, 12:7)
God loves mercy, and more than that, God wants us to Read More

The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whosoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. John 3:34-36

“Imagine a church where every single person without exception comes to consume, to get something–from others. They are there, every single one of them, to receive, and not one would get what they came for.
“Now imagine a church where every single person without exception comes to love the other people there. They are there, every one of them, to give. Every single one will receive what they’re looking for.
“Hebrews 10:23-25 says ‘…stir up one another to love and good works…'”
–Chuck Bomar
We can’t stir up one another alone, there has to be others, there has to be community.
From my notes on Chuck Bomar’s teaching Reflecting God’s Love, 1 John Chapter 4, Sunday 10/11/15, Colossae Church, Tigard, Oregon

“He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.” (John 3:31-34)
The 1 Thing I Do
“No one receives his testimony,” John the Baptist said. Why is that?
First, let me say that I think what John is saying here is, in his day almost no one received Jesus’ testimony. It seems that John uses the phrase “no one” as a figure of speech. Because it’s true that while Jesus remained on earth, relatively few received his testimony and accepted him as Savior and Messiah. But that’s not the main point I want to write about today. The main point is the one thing I do to drown out Jesus’ testimony from my hearing. And we find insight about that one thing in a group of Jesus’ contemporaries: the Read More
